Wizards of Whisky: John Crabbie

“John Crabbie was a Scottish businessman and whisky merchant who lived from 1806 to 1891. He was a true whisky hero due to his significant contributions to the whisky industry.

In 1837, he founded his own company, John Crabbie & Co, which became one of the most successful whisky merchants in Scotland and is still in operation today. John Crabbie was an innovator in blending whisky and created a unique blend of Scotch whisky with ginger, known as Crabbie’s Green Ginger Wine, which became very popular in the Victorian era and is still produced today.

He was also one of the first whisky merchants to export Scotch whisky to countries outside of Scotland, and he developed a network of agents and distributors throughout the world. Furthermore, he invested in several distilleries throughout Scotland, including the Balmenach Distillery and the Old Mull Distillery on the Isle of Mull.

John Crabbie was a proud Scot who believed in promoting Scottish culture, sponsoring events such as the Highland Games and supporting Scottish literature and poetry. Overall, he helped to establish Scotland as a world-renowned producer of whisky and left a lasting legacy in the industry. (Credits – crabbiewhisky.com/scotchwhisky.com”
